Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center has been named one of America’s Best Stroke Centers by the Women’s Choice Award®, a trusted referral source for the best in health care. This designation places Moanalua Medical Center in the top 6% of 4,728 U.S. hospitals offering stroke care services.

The award is based on robust criteria that includes relevant clinical performance, patient satisfaction, and appropriate accreditations. The methodology used to select Moanalua Medical Center as one of America’s Best Stroke Centers is unique in that it evaluates patient survey results from HCAHPS, or Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, along with primary research about women’s health care preferences.

“At Moanalua Medical Center, we’re honored to again receive the Women’s Choice Award for our work in preventive care and recovery for Hawaii’s stroke patients,” said Todd Devere, MD, chief of neurology at Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii. “Following guidance from the American Heart Association, we continue to address historically high stroke rates in women by offering timely, effective, and individualized care.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the lifetime risk of stroke for women between the ages of 55 and 75 is 1 in 5. Women account for nearly 60% of stroke deaths, and strokes kill twice as many women as breast cancer. Most alarming, studies show that women are more likely to be misdiagnosed for stroke, even when presenting the same symptoms as men.
