HONOLULU — The Pharmacy Quality Alliance, a nonprofit organization focused on improving the quality of medication used in health care, named Kaiser Permanente one of nine recipients of the 2018 Excellence in Quality Awards. The award recognizes health plans with the highest level of achievement in performance and medication use quality. This is the third time Kaiser Permanente Hawaii’s pharmacy program has received the PQA Excellence in Quality Award, representing the top 0.3 percent of 2,692 eligible Medicare Advantage Part D plans.
Recipients of PQA’s Excellence in Quality Awards must achieve an overall summary rating of at least 4.5 out of a possible 5 stars in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicare Part D Star Ratings program. Additionally, eligible awardees must receive the highest rating of 5 stars on all four PQA-endorsed measures used in the medication quality component of CMS’ Star Ratings program. The pharmacy-related measures include drug plan customer service, member complaints and changes in the drug plan’s performance, member experience with the drug plan, and drug safety and accuracy of drug pricing.
“Medication safety and management is a top priority in our integrated care model, which focuses on the total health of our members,” said Ross Takara, RPh, PharmD, BCACP, senior director, pharmacy department at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “We’re honored to receive recognition from the pharmacy industry’s leading quality measurement organization, which speaks to the exceptional care and service delivered by our compassionate and driven pharmacists, health care providers and staff.”
