In Hawaii, we lead the nation in diabetes care measures

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has been named the highest-performing health care provider in the U.S. in Statin Therapy for Patients with Diabetes and Follow-up Care for Children Prescribed ADHD Medications

HONOLULU —  Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has been named the highest-performing health care provider in the U.S. in "Statin Therapy for Patients with Diabetes and Follow-up Care for Children Prescribed ADHD Medications — initiation phase," according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance in its prestigious Quality Compass report of commercial health plans. Kaiser Permanente Hawaii was also recognized for "Comprehensive Diabetes Care — blood pressure control," tying with Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States for the position of highest-performing health care provider in the nation.

“We are proud of the great work our caregivers are doing to combat diabetes, which affects one in three adults in Hawaii,” said Linda Puu, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii vice president of Quality, Safety and Service. “Our integrated model of care helps patients better manage their chronic conditions so they can live healthy lives and thrive.”

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 150,000 people in Hawaii live with diabetes and more than 450,000 additional residents are classified as prediabetic. Among the many serious complications that often accompany diabetes are high blood pressure and heart disease.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 3.2 percent of children in Hawaii are taking prescription medication for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Children who suffer from ADHD often face social and academic challenges due to forgetfulness, carelessness and difficulty paying attention.

Earlier this year, the NCQA Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2017–2018 awarded Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare plan a rating of five out of five, the highest rating in the state. In addition, Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center earned an "A" grade in the Fall 2017 Hospital Safety Score, the health care industry standard for evaluating hospitals’ performance in keeping patients safe from preventable medical errors.
