HONOLULU — The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit health care transparency advocate, has awarded Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center its 12th straight A grade in the Spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The Hospital Safety Grade, administered in the spring and fall every year, measures the overall performance of approximately 2,700 hospitals nationwide in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. Moanalua Medical Center is also honored with the Straight A distinction for receiving 5 or more consecutive A grades.

The Hospital Safety Grade utilizes hospital performance data collected by national health care organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Scores are calculated by using up to 27 national safety measures. The information is publicly available in hospital data related to patient care, medication errors, and infection prevention and released as a free resource to help patients and their families make informed health care decisions. Only 33% of hospitals in the United States received an A grade in the spring 2021 report.

“Fear of COVID-19 can still prevent some patients from getting the care they need, so we’ve taken extraordinary safety precautions at Moanalua Medical Center and all of our clinics to help give folks peace of mind,” said John Yang, MD, president and medical director of Hawaii Permanente Medical Group. “We have a number of intelligent systems in place that highlight potential safety issues for our physicians and providers and help protect our patients from dangerous drug interactions, injuries, and infections.”
