HONOLULU ― Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center has been recognized by the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® awards for high quality stroke and cardiac care. The awards recognize the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke, heart failure, and severe heart attack patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines founded in the latest scientific evidence. The goal is speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke and severe heart attack patients, and reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients.

Moanalua Medical Center received the following designations:

  • Get With The Guidelines — Stroke Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll — Hospitals must meet specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period.
  • Get With The Guidelines — Heart Failure and Gold Plus and Target: Heart FailureSM Honor Roll — Recognition criteria include improved medication adherence, providing early follow-up care and coordination and enhanced patient education.
  • Mission: Lifeline® Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award — Every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the deadliest type of heart attack, caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. The Moanalua Medical Center met criteria and standards of performance for quick and appropriate treatment to re-establish blood flow to blocked arteries in heart attack patients.

“Moanalua Medical Center’s Get With The Guidelines recognitions demonstrate our commitment to advance patient-care with compassion, innovation and excellence,” said John Yang, MD, president and medical director for Hawaii Permanente Medical Group. “Our evidence-based integrated care allows us to accurately assess, stabilize and treat an acute condition to improve patient outcomes.”

The hospital’s recognition in stroke care indicates it is meeting specific quality achievement measures that include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments. Before discharge, the hospital ensures that patients also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

Moanalua Medical Center earned the heart failure awards and honor roll status by meeting quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies. Patients also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions before discharge.

The Moanalua Medical Center also received the ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) award by demonstrating the organization’s commitment to reducing barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks — starting from when 9-1-1 is called, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge.

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year, 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and more than 6.5 million adults in the United States are living with heart failure. Many stroke and heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications or devices and with healthy lifestyle changes.
