The gold standard of nursing excellence

Kaiser Permanente Ontario Medical Center achieves Magnet® status, the highest national honor for nursing excellence.

Kaiser Permanente Ontario Medical Center received Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for its nursing professionalism, teamwork, and superior patient care. Magnet designation is an award that recognizes organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing services, and it’s the highest national credential for nurses’ excellence that can be awarded to any organization. Only about 9% of hospitals in the country have attained this award.

"To earn Magnet recognition is a great accomplishment," said Barbara A. Murphy, MSN, RN, chief nurse executive, Kaiser Permanente Ontario Medical Center. "Magnet demonstrates our ongoing commitment to meeting and delivering the highest standards in nursing care. I am honored to work with such an amazing team of nurses."

This Magnet recognition, announced by the ANCC in late 2022, makes Kaiser Permanente Ontario Medical Center the sixth Kaiser Permanente facility in Southern California to receive this recognition. Previously, the Kaiser Permanente Orange County, Irvine, and Anaheim medical centers received Magnet recognition in 2017 and 2018, respectively; Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center were awarded in 2021; Kaiser Permanente Orange County Irvine Medical Center’s received second Magnet designation in 2021; and Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center received the designation in 2022.

Earning Magnet designation demonstrates the hard work and dedication of the entire hospital staff and reinforces the core value Kaiser Permanente nursing brings: patient and family focus, professionalism, integrity, compassion, excellence, and teamwork.

"Research shows that Magnet hospitals consistently provide patients with the highest quality of care," said Georgina Garcia, senior vice president and area manager, Kaiser Permanente San Bernardino County service area. "This recognition reflects our nurses’ commitment to providing exceptional care every day. We’re extremely proud of this distinction earned by our nursing staff at our Ontario Medical Center."

The ANCC's Magnet recognition is a factor for people when choosing their health care organization — and earning this designation makes it easy for many to choose the expertise of Kaiser Permanente.

The recognition process is rigorous and demanding, requiring widespread participation from the hospital staff, including leadership. It includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the ANCC’s Commission on Magnet Recognition.
