Climate action

Climate action

The impact of climate change on both our environment and human health is substantial and affects everyone, with the worst impacts felt by those who are most vulnerable.

Climate action goal

By 2025, we will become “carbon net positive” by buying enough clean energy and carbon offsets to remove more greenhouse gases from the atmosphere than we emit.

Our current progress:

  • Since 2008, we have reduced our operational greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent while expanding our health care services to 3.1 million additional Americans.
  • As of early 2018, 36 of our facilities hosted onsite solar panels. We are working to increase our purchasing of renewable electricity to 100 percent of total usage by 2020.
  • Between 2014 and 2017, Kaiser Permanente achieved a 23 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions associated with its use of anesthetic agents.
  • In 2017, Kaiser Permanente began operating California’s first hospital-based microgrid at its Richmond Medical Center. Paired with a 250-kw solar installation, the microgrid can store 1 MWh of clean energy, which it releases to help power the hospital when needed most — saving the facility up to 50 percent on its energy bills.
