Artificial intelligence

Kaiser Permanente is leading responsible use of AI to improve health.

As one of the nation's largest integrated health care organizations with a long history of adopting new technologies and applying them broadly, we are leading the responsible use of artificial intelligence across the health care sector.

We use AI-based tools to improve health outcomes and the member care experience. And we use them without compromising patient safety, privacy, or the quality of our care. AI never makes medical decisions — our physicians and care teams do.

How we use AI to improve care for our members

Our approach to responsible AI puts people at the center of decision-making. We use AI to help our clinicians and care teams:

  • Improve care
  • Enhance patient–clinician relationships
  • Optimize clinicians' time
  • Ensure fairness in care experiences and health outcomes by addressing individual needs

Despite strong evidence that AI can improve care, a lack of trust in it can slow adoption.

Policymakers can strengthen trust in AI by setting clear standards to ensure AI tools are safe, secure, and easy to use.

Advancing responsible AI nationally

Kaiser Permanente is working with experts to make sure AI is used responsibly. Here’s what we’re doing:

  • Partnering with the National Academy of Medicine to establish an AI code of conduct for the health care industry
  • Helping set best practices for using AI safely and fairly as part of the Coalition for Health AI
  • Working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology to create standards for managing AI risks
  • Serving on the Bipartisan Policy Council’s AI Advisory Committee

To improve health and health care, we advocate for AI policies that promote the following goals.

  • Ensure AI benefits every patient: Build AI systems using high-quality, inclusive data.
  • Focus on outcomes: Test AI tools to make sure they’re safe, high-quality, and effective. Involve doctors, experts, and patients to see how they work in real life.
  • Support research at scale: Promote large clinical trials to get strong proof about the safety and effectiveness of AI tools instead of relying on isolated studies.
  • Evaluate over time: Set up regular checks to evaluate how AI performs and fix any problems quickly.
  • Keep AI safe and secure: Use ongoing quality checks, safety systems, and feedback to maintain the integrity of AI systems.
  • Protect privacy: Follow strong privacy rules, such as HIPAA, to keep people’s information safe.
  • Set clear rules: Make fair guidelines that ensure AI use is responsible, transparent, and accountable.
