Today’s environmental challenges require that health care organizations reach beyond the health care sector to engage stakeholders in finance, business, energy, conservation, education, and public policy.

Collaboration goal

By 2025, we will pursue new collaborations to reduce environmental risks to foodsheds, watersheds, and air basins supplying our communities.

Our current progress:

• Our environmentally preferable purchasing standard was written in collaboration with other stakeholders, and the standard is already influencing suppliers to provide healthier products to the entire health care sector.
• In 2017, we issued $1 billion in green bonds (bonds that that appeal to funds and investors that look for environmentally or socially friendly organizations to invest in). The bonds will be used to finance the construction of our LEED-certified hospitals.
• We created a publicly available Community Health Needs Assessment database that makes it possible to identify and map the environmental and social problems and opportunities in communities across the U.S. This data informs our allocation of resources in communities.
• We work with numerous NGO partners to improve community and environmental health through community benefit investments aimed at supporting active transportation, strengthening local food systems, advocating for the removal of toxins in consumer products, reducing pollution, and strengthening climate action.
