4 parent tips for back-to-school success

The start of the school year can bring up different emotions for children and parents. Check out these supportive tips for peace of mind.

For parents of kids active in sports, prioritizing their health and safety is essential.

As a parent or caregiver, the beginning of the school year can be a struggle.

It’s important to focus on the little things that can make a big difference for your child’s well-being and readiness.

Here are 4 tips to make starting school easier.

1. Prep your routines

Adjust your child’s sleep schedule and gradually shift bedtimes and wake-up times.

“Sleep is one of those foundational things that children need, along with structure,” said Lateefah Watford, MD, a psychiatrist for Kaiser Permanente in Georgia. “They absolutely need sleep not just for their physical health, but also for their emotional well-being.”

2. Think holistically

A holistic approach means getting kids get ready for school in every way, not just for schoolwork.

You can help make sure they eat healthy foods that are good for their body and brain. And plan ahead for easy, healthy school lunches and snacks.

You can help them feel mentally strong by talking about how they feel about going back to school and showing them ways to relax when they’re stressed.

“Talk to your kids about the change. I think it’s really important to have a family plan.” said Dr. Watford. “Sit down and write it out: Here’s what’s going to happen after school and for homework, chores, and bedtime.”

3. Certify it

Most schools won’t let kids start classes without a complete immunization record. Kaiser Permanente members can sign in to their kp.org account to easily access their vaccination records.

Vaccinations help keep all children safe by preventing the spread of diseases at school, where kids are in close contact.

4. Get sporty

For parents and caregivers with children active in sports, it’s vital to prioritize their health and safety.

Ensure your child has a comprehensive health exam before starting any sport. Often, kids can’t join the team if they haven’t submitted a form from their doctor.

Teach your child proper warm-up and cool-down routines to avoid injuries. You can find information about fitness and exercise on kp.org and in our mobile app.
