Making waves to empower young girls

Kaiser Permanente and the San Diego Wave Fútbol Club host a second Wave of Wellness Fit Clinic to promote mental health and physical well-being.

Fit clinics leverage soccer drills, tailored discussions, and wellness resources to create an experience that fosters mental resilience and connectedness.

Kaiser Permanente and the San Diego Wave Fútbol Club held a “Wave of Wellness” Fit Clinic where they encouraged more than 30 teen girls and their families to explore the importance of mental well-being. As the Wave Fútbol Club’s trusted team physicians, 2 Kaiser Permanente clinicians encouraged attendees to balance daily stress, participate in physical activity, and manage the use of social media. Wave FC player, Kailen Sheridan was on hand to speak about what mental wellness means to her and how sports positively impact her life.

Wellness for the next generation

Ensuring young people have access to resources is essential to building healthy communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mental health problems in youth can lead to other health and behavioral risks that can impact adulthood. As the number of young people experiencing poor mental health increases, Kaiser Permanente remains dedicated to helping meet their unique health needs.

“The collaboration between Kaiser Permanente and Wave FC represents a shared commitment to empowering youth, especially young girls,” said Michelle Gaskill-Hames, interim regional president, Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Hawaii markets. “The Wave of Wellness Fit Clinics are one of many initiatives we have planned in collaboration with Wave FC. I am confident that our actions can help pave the way to seamlessly integrate physical and mental well-being, creating a powerful wave of wellness among the next generation.”

Creating a comprehensive experience that fosters mental resilience

Physical activity and strong bonds are critical for supporting youth mental health and well-being. These fit clinics also leverage soccer drills, tailored discussions, and wellness resources to create a comprehensive experience that fosters mental resilience and connectedness. While teens engage in physical activities to help alleviate stress, their parents and families are also engaged in discussions around helping youth feel connected to family.

“Our partnership with Kaiser Permanente allows us to go beyond the games on the field and prioritize the overall well-being of our local community,” said San Diego Wave FC president Jill Ellis. “We hope to nurture our youth’s growth as individuals. Together, I believe we can create an empowering environment to support long-term happiness and fulfillment.”

The next clinic will be in the Fall of 2023 and will contribute to our focus on total health programming for San Diego youth. Learn more about supporting youth mental health and well-being.
