Kaiser Permanente expands opportunities for youth in Inglewood and South Los Angeles, California, through wellness, leadership, and learning programs.
This initiative supports programs that boost wellness, like gardening.
Kaiser Permanente has been part of the South Los Angeles community for more than 50 years. We provide care for people at places like the Watts Counseling and Learning Center, Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Medical Offices, and Sports Medicine Center at Intuit Dome. But our care goes beyond medicine. We also team up with other groups to reach young people and families.
That is why we started a program called Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies, Thriving Futures with our partner Brotherhood Crusade. This initiative supports young people through programs focused on wellness, physical activity, nutrition, and leadership.
Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies, Thriving Futures will help young people in Inglewood and South Los Angeles. Brotherhood Crusade will lead programs with local groups, like The Amer‑I‑Can Foundation for Social Change, Balance of Life Project, Chris Paul Family Foundation, Compton Community Health Professions Partnership, Crop Swap LA, Keep It Run Hundred, Social Justice Learning Institute, and St. John’s Community Health.
Each year, these groups will work with 300 youth in leadership and peer-support programs. They will also support 1,500 more youth with mental health, physical activity, and nutrition activities.
The programs will focus on 1 of 3 areas:
These efforts show how working together can support health, learning, and new opportunities for young people.

“Every young person has a story, and our goal is to meet them where they are, whether in school, at home, or in their neighborhood,” said Michelle Gaskill-Hames, regional president of Kaiser Permanente in Southern California and Hawaii. “By partnering with Brotherhood Crusade and other organizations, we are strengthening our collective capacity and deepening our impact across South Los Angeles.”
“Through partnerships with schools and local organizations, we hope to inspire young people and show that health, wellness, and opportunity extend beyond the clinic,” said Ramin Davidoff, MD, executive medical director for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. “This initiative builds on decades of service and opens doors for youth to stay healthy, confident, and active for years to come.”
Initiatives like Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies, Thriving Futures matter in Inglewood and South Los Angeles. In these communities, many young people face barriers to good health, education, and opportunity. Kaiser Permanente chose Brotherhood Crusade to lead this work because they have deep roots in the community. They also have strong local ties. This will help bring trusted groups together to provide programs near where youth live and learn.
“Our work with Kaiser Permanente is helping create new opportunities for young people and families,” said Charisse Bremond Weaver, president and CEO of Brotherhood Crusade. “Together, we are building stronger community networks and opening new doors for youth to grow, lead, and make an impact.”
