John Yang, MD, is the president and medical director of the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, effective November 2020.
Prior to this role, as a practicing physician for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Dr. Yang served as the physician director of primary care for Kaiser Permanente Orange County starting in 2015. He oversaw primary care operations, which included day-to-day budget and quality issues for the Family Medicine, Pediatric, Urgent Care, Allergy, and Dermatology departments.
Outside of his medical practice and role as a director, Dr. Yang worked tirelessly to advance many other initiatives within the organization, including efforts to recruit and retain physician talent on behalf of SCPMG’s Physician Compensation Committee. In his role as a physician marketing ambassador, Dr. Yang provided business groups and future customers with essential clinical and operational insights that demonstrate Kaiser Permanente’s value.
Dr. Yang joined SCPMG in 2001 as a family medicine physician. He is certified in family medicine from the American Board of Family Medicine and was named Family Physician of the Year for Kaiser Permanente Orange County. He is also a recipient of the Parke-Davis Resident Teacher of the Year award.
In his spare time, Dr. Yang enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 children, fostering Guide Dogs of America puppies, traveling as often as possible, and staying active playing basketball, running, and biking.
He received his Bachelor of Science in biology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his doctor of medicine degree at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University. After completion of his medical degree, Dr. Yang finished his residency in family medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine/Providence Hospital and completed a medical informatics and faculty development fellowship.
