Healthier caramel dip

Dates are the secret ingredient in this fall treat.

Healthier caramel dip

This simple and tasty dip is perfect for serving with apples as a healthy alternative to caramel apples. It’s a fun way to welcome fall and is easy for kids to help prepare.

Feel free to swap the almond butter for cashew butter, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter to suit your preferences. For a pumpkin spice twist, add some pumpkin pie spices like nutmeg, cloves, ginger, or even cardamom. The dip saves well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks.

Servings: 10

Prep time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 10 medjool dates, pitted
  • 1/2 cup boiling hot water
  • 1/4 cup almond butter (or other nut or seed butter)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch kosher salt

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, add the hot water to the medjool dates and let set for about 10 minutes to soften.
  2. After 10 minutes, move the dates and water to a food processor. Add the almond butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and pinch of salt. Purée on high speed until completely smooth, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add more water, a tablespoon at a time, as needed to keep things moving.
  3. Serve with sliced apples to dip.
