2022 in review: A focus on equity, quality, and community

Our annual report shows how our dedicated employees and physicians provided compassionate care and service while balancing the challenges faced by all of health care.

In 2022, we continued to focus on our mission — to provide high-quality, affordable health care services and improve the health of our members and communities.

Despite major challenges, Kaiser Permanente continued to deliver high-quality, affordable, equitable health care during 2022.

Here are a few highlights from our 2022 Annual Report:

Meeting needs in the pandemic

In 2022 we:

  • Cared for nearly 1.8 million people with COVID-19, including 53,000 who were hospitalized
  • Administered more than 5 million vaccine doses
  • Conducted more than 7 million COVID-19 lab tests
  • Provided more than 14 million home antigen tests

We also treated members who had a variety of health needs, including members with health problems that had been delayed and deferred since the pandemic began.

Advancing health equity

We increased our focus on equity. The unequal impact of COVID-19 showed the nation that racism and injustice harm health.

We worked to make high-quality care available to everyone, while adjusting our approach to better serve the unique needs of each member.

One way we promote equity is by having a diverse workforce:

  • In 2022, nearly 70% of our employees and physicians were members of underrepresented and historically marginalized groups
  • More than 70% of our employees were women

Quality, innovation, and our communities

We continued to improve the high-quality care we provide to our members and the communities we serve in various ways, including:

  • Examining our impact on our members’ lives, which found that Kaiser Permanente members are 20% less likely to die prematurely from cancer compared to nonmembers in their communities
  • Providing $345 million to fund important research
  • Making great strides to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions
  • Introducing new options for members to receive care away from home
  • Increasing access to healthy food
  • Providing financial support to businesses owned by women and people of color

The power of our people

Our physicians and employees are remarkable in their contributions and dedication to our mission. They help make Kaiser Permanente a great place for care and coverage.

And we’re proud to employ so many union members — nearly 75% of our employees are represented by unions. Our historic Labor Management Partnership marked its 25th anniversary in 2022. The Labor Management Partnership continues to be the longest-lasting partnership of its kind in the country.

Our mission continued to be our guiding force in 2022. Our teams worked together to ensure everyone had the opportunity to achieve their best health. Learn more in the 2022 Annual Report and 2022 Community Health Snapshot.
