Reach Out and Read

Kaiser Permanente's partnership with Reach Out and Read ensures that growing up healthy means growing up with books.

Reach Out and Read is a national organization that promotes literacy by providing a new book to children at their well-child visits beginning at 6 months of age. Kaiser Permanente was the first health care system to adopt the Reach Out and Read model. Research shows that children who grow up with books and who are read to during the first years of life are more likely to love reading and start school ready to learn.

  • Nearly 80 Kaiser Permanente pediatric clinics and satellite sites serving as nationally-recognized Reach Out and Read outposts
  • More than 800 Kaiser Permanente pediatric providers giving guidance to children and their parents during well-child visits
  • Annually, about 230,000 books distributed to children through Kaiser Permanente
