Tom Hanenburg is the interim regional president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Hospitals of Northern California. In this role, Hanenburg directs all of Kaiser Permanente’s care delivery and health plan operations in Northern California.
Hanenburg reports directly to Kaiser Permanente’s group president and chief operating officer for care delivery.
Hanenburg joined Kaiser Permanente in 2013 as the senior vice president and area manager of the Greater Southern Alameda County Service Area.
He most recently served as chief operating officer with responsibility and oversight of Kaiser Permanente operations in Northern California, with a portfolio including service area operations, compliance, continuum of care, human resources, quality, and clinical services. Before assuming this role, Hanenburg was the senior vice president for hospital and health plan operations for Northern California from 2016 to 2018.
Prior to Kaiser Permanente, Hanenburg was chief executive officer of the Southern Oregon area for Providence Health & Services, which included operational oversight for Providence Medford Medical Center, Providence Medical Group, and the Providence Community Health Foundation. He has also held executive positions with national hospital systems, including Duke University Health System, Health Management Associates, and Humana.
He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, and a board member of the East Bay Community Foundation, and the St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, California, which is a joint venture between CommonSpirit and Kaiser Permanente.
Hanenburg holds a master’s degree in health services administration and a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management, both from Arizona State University.
