Negotiations underway on a new agreement

Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association CNA hold productive bargaining sessions on July 7, 9, 20, 24, and 27.

MESSAGE TO OUR
EMPLOYEES

This message was sent on July 30, 2026, to Kaiser Permanente nurses in Northern California represented by the California Nurses Association from Lionel Sims, senior vice president, Human Resources, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, and Priya Smith, chief employee human resources officer, The Permanente Medical Group.

Kaiser Permanente and CNA (the California Nurses Association) have met 5 times — on July 7, 9, 20, 24, and 27, 2026 — to negotiate a new agreement for our Northern California nurses.

Every day, you bring skill, compassion, and commitment to our members and the communities we serve. Whether supporting patients through routine visits, life-changing diagnoses, or moments of crisis, you make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Thank you for all you do and for the professionalism you continue to demonstrate as bargaining moves forward.

The first 5 bargaining sessions were constructive and respectful.

While there is more work ahead, we are focused on issues that are important to you, our patients, and the future of care delivery in Northern California.

As we work toward a new agreement, we remain committed to supporting you while ensuring we can continue providing high-quality, affordable care to the 4.7 million members who depend on us.

Here’s what we’ve discussed so far:

  • Health and safety
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Training and certifications
  • Workplace resources
  • Use of travel nurses
  • Advanced practice and hospice care
  • Enhanced ratios

About the bargaining process

Both sides bring proposals to the table, and it’s common for proposals to be accepted, rejected, or countered as discussions evolve.

Throughout bargaining, we remain committed to listening, engaging respectfully, bargaining in good faith, and focusing on proposals that affect your wages, hours, and working conditions, as the law requires.

What’s next

Bargaining will continue in August, with sessions scheduled for August 4, 6, 11, 13, 25, and 27.

The current Northern California agreement expires August 31, 2026.

Bottom line

We know how much you give to this work every day. We take seriously our responsibility to get this right — for you and for the members who count on your care.

We are committed to reaching a fair agreement that includes competitive pay, outstanding benefits, and professional growth opportunities rarely found elsewhere in health care.

At the same time, we must ensure care remains affordable and accessible for the members and communities who depend on us.
