700 students beating the odds through drumming

Kaiser Permanente grant helps fund elementary school program that uses drumming to help kids be more resilient.

Sitting in a drum circle, students pound out rhythms and beats — some improvised, some synchronized — as part of the Beat the Odds program for children.

Students are encouraged to listen, focus, and connect. This offers children a safe, healthy outlet when they face stress, anxiety, and trauma. Kaiser Permanente provided a grant to fund the Every Neighborhood Partnership — a nonprofit organization in Fresno County that facilitates the Beat the Odds program — in 5 Fresno Unified elementary schools.
