Salt and the San Lorenzo Public Library

Last night I had the opportunity to talk to maybe 50 members of the San Lorenzo community and do a basic kitchen skills 101 cooking demonstration. Joining me was Hank Herrera, founder of Dig Deep Farm, and a wonderful man that has spent his work life doing good things for different communities.

We set up near the magazine stacks and had to bring in extra chairs. Following our presentations and the demo ( Corn, Cherry Tomato and Cilantro Salad from an earlier post), there were many good questions. As I had mentioned the role of salt in some medical problems and the fact that people got most of their salt from packaged and processed foods, there were a number of questions on this topic.

A good basic starting point is cooking your own food. In general, we add much less salt when preparing fresh food at home than you get in fast food or packaged foods. Check out this informative link about salt for more eye opening information.

At the end of the evening, a boy, maybe 11 or 12, came up and asked for the URL to this blog because he wanted to cook some of my recipes. Absolutely made my day.
