Welcome to Food for Health. We are excited to share recipes that reflect our belief that good taste and good health go hand in hand. Our doctors, nurses and dietitians are passionate about cooking wholesome food for a healthier life.

Food for Health is a place for dedicated Kaiser Permanente caregivers to post recipes and talk about important issues related to nutrition and health.

Celebrating the importance of healthy eating has a long history at Kaiser Permanente. In the summer of 2002, Kaiser Permanente's Preston Maring, MD, had an epiphany as he was walking through the lobby of his hospital in Oakland, Calif. A farmers' market at the hospital, he realized, would be a natural fit.

"As a physician, it's clear to me that what people eat has a crucial impact on their health," Dr. Maring said. "The best way to bring people into the fold of eating healthy, locally sourced foods would be to encourage them to cook good food. And what better way to get people started than to start a farmers' market to provide the ingredients?"

Kaiser Permanente now sponsors more than 50 farmers markets and farm stands across the country. As the markets multiplied, Dr. Maring starting sharing recipes with colleagues by email and then on his blog.

Dr. Maring, who retired at the end of 2013 after 42 years with Kaiser Permanente, inspired a healthy eating and sustainable food movement that lives on at the organization. This enthusiasm for good, healthy food has taken hold with many physicians, nurses, dieticians and others at Kaiser Permanente. You will meet some of them here on this blog.
