The new Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Walnut Creek, California, opened in 1953 on the old Scherman estate.

Joe Scherman, the man who sold the property to Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, was a successful businessman who had made his fortune in metals.

The Scherman house swimming pool and cabanas remained features of the Walnut Creek Hospital for many years.

The arch of the cabana building spanned a large barbecue and inside the cabana house there were milkshake mixers and freezer wells for ice cream.
