HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente Hawaii held a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony today for its newest facility, a 9,444-square-foot ambulatory surgery center for same-day surgical procedures at Mapunapuna Medical Office. The center includes an operating room, a procedure room, five endoscopy suites, and 16 pre-op/recovery bays for outpatient eye surgeries and gastroenterology procedures, in a centrally located facility designed for healing. Patient appointments are set to begin May 1.
The ambulatory surgery center will perform cataract surgery, corneal transplants and other specialty eye surgeries, as well as upper endoscopies, colonoscopies and other same-day procedures. A team of 13 physicians and approximately 30 staff members will provide same-day surgical care to an estimated 7,000 patients per year.
“Investing in state-of-the-art technology and equipment for our facilities allows us to provide members with the best possible experience and environment for healing,” said Mary Ann Barnes, RN, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals Hawaii Region.
“Our members are often surprised and pleased to find out that they can have a complex surgical procedure and still go home to recover that same day,” said Geoffrey Sewell, MD, president and executive medical director of Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, whose physicians and providers care for Kaiser Permanente Hawaii members. “We’re excited to welcome our patients to experience the new facility at Mapunapuna Medical Office, and we look forward to the opportunity to expand to other types of ambulatory surgeries and procedures in the near future.”
