Now open: Medical offices, cancer center in Oakland, Calif.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Kaiser Permanente will open its new Broadway Medical Office Building/Cancer Care Center in Oakland on Monday, May 4. Starting that day, a host of medical specialties will be offered to Kaiser Permanente members in the new state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly building at the corner of Broadway and West MacArthur Boulevard, across the street from the existing Oakland Medical Center.

The new facility is a major step forward in the master plan to rebuild the Oakland Medical Center campus, incorporating new design features that will improve and expand delivery of care. The building includes the new Regional Pediatric Rehabilitation Department, which will treat children from throughout Northern California.

"The vision of the Broadway Medical Office Building and Cancer Center is now a reality,” said Shirley Steinback, medical group administrator for the Oakland Medical Center. "Our members, staff, physicians and community will be very proud of this beautiful 'green' facility. It will always be a constant reminder of our commitment to our members and the community we serve."

The new Cancer Care Center will offer a variety of services, including hematology-oncology, chemotherapy/infusion and radiation oncology services tailored to meet patient needs, including valet parking that will allow more convenient access to appointments.

"The cancer center opening represents a forward step in our patient-focused cancer care," said Jason Kelly, MD, associate director, Radiation Oncology Services, and chief of radiation oncology. "Integration of gynecologic, medical, and radiation cancer services within the center helps streamline care. For example, patients with a newly diagnosed breast cancer will have the option to participate in a clinic where they will be able to meet with a surgeon, a medical oncologist and radiation oncologist – all in the same visit – to get expert options and a coordinated care plan."

In addition to the cancer center, the new facility will offer a host of specialty medical services, including ambulatory surgery, dermatology, radiation therapy, neurology, occupational and employee health, outpatient nutritional services, pharmacies, laboratory, adult medicine, internal medicine and health education.

The eco-friendly design and construction of the new building demonstrates Kaiser Permanente's commitment to the environment and community health. Environmentally responsible materials were used throughout the facility. These include carpeting that has no polyvinyl chloride, low volatile organic compound paints, PVC-free rubber flooring that requires no harsh chemicals for cleaning or maintenance, and cotton insulation in walls made from recycled cotton and denim.

Landscaped areas and swales treat storm water, which flows to our Glen Echo Creek restoration. The design includes re-graded slopes to be more natural and sustainable.

Visitors also will find high-efficiency glass, sunshades, and blinds that allow daylight in while minimizing afternoon heat from the sun. Interior lighting features low wattage per square foot, and occupancy sensors are located on each floor to automatically turn off lights when they aren't needed.

The five-floor, 165,000-square-foot facility, located at 3701 Broadway, contains offices for 50 providers and is adjacent to a new four-level parking garage. It also is convenient to BART and AC Transit bus lines.

A VIP tour will start at 9:45 a.m. Ribbon cutting is at 10:15 a.m. on the ground floor.
