Among America’s top corporations for supplier diversity

Kaiser Permanente recently celebrated big wins from two major supplier diversity organizations acknowledging its commitment to supporting women and minority-owned businesses in the communities it serves.

On April 15, the Western Region Minority Supplier Development Council awarded Kaiser Permanente its Corporation of the Year award for the third year in a row. WRMSDC is a local minority business advocacy organization that supports the growth and welfare of minority communities by championing the use of minority-owned businesses.

Kaiser Permanente was selected for this award by both minority businesses and corporate members of the WRMSDC.

“On behalf of Kaiser Permanente, I couldn’t be more proud of our diverse suppliers throughout the country who work hard providing supplies to our employees, members and patients, and are key to helping Kaiser Permanente in our mission to deliver high-quality, affordable health care,” said Chief Procurement and Supply Chain Officer Laurel Junk. “The whole program is critical to continuing to advance our overall diversity and inclusion agenda nationally.”

Skip Skivington, vice president, Health Care Continuity and Support Services for Kaiser Permanente, received the Supplier Diversity Executive of the Year award for his excellent supplier diversity leadership.

“I am personally honored to accept this award because it acknowledges the hard work of both our Sourcing and National Supplier Diversity teams who work hard to contract with and support our diverse suppliers every day throughout the year.”

Kaiser Permanente was also recently named one of America’s Top Corporations for Women Business Enterprises by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. WBENC recognized 62 corporations that successfully integrated diversity into their supply chains to fuel economic growth and job creation, spending more than $34 billion doing business with women-owned businesses in 2015.

“This recognition really supports our commitment to women-owned businesses, who are a key component of our supplier diversity program,” said Beverly Norman-Cooper, executive director of Kaiser Permanente’s National Supplier Diversity program.

"We are so proud of WBENC's Top Corporations, including Kaiser Permanente, for choosing to set the standard for access and increasing opportunities to women suppliers in new markets — both domestically and internationally," said Pamela Prince-Eason, president and CEO of WBENC.

A banner year

The awards topped off a banner year, as Kaiser Permanente surpassed its goal to purchase $1.1 billion for products and services from diverse-owned businesses, with a record total of $1.68 billion. In 2014, Kaiser Permanente became the first health care organization in the nation to earn membership into the Billion Dollar Roundtable, a group of U.S. corporations that has committed to spend at least $1 billion annually with certified minority- and women-owned businesses.

“When Kaiser Permanente buys the products and services it needs from small and diverse businesses operating in our communities, we contribute to a healthy business environment and a more vibrant economy,” said Norman-Cooper.
