HONOLULU — UNITE HERE Local 5, which represents 1,900 Kaiser Permanente health care workers in Hawaii, has joined the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, AFL-CIO. UNITE HERE Local 5 workers include licensed practical nurses, ward clerks and other health care staff who provide care and service to Kaiser Permanente members at medical centers and offices throughout Hawaii.
The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, AFL-CIO, represents nearly 120,000 health care workers from 32 locals nationwide, including the OPEIU Local 50/Hawaii Nurses Association. The coalition partners with Kaiser Permanente and Permanente medical groups in each region to form a Labor Management Partnership, an innovative model for labor relations.
“By joining the Coalition of Kaiser Unions, Local 5 members join with the Hawaii Nurses Association and 120,000 other unionized Kaiser professional employees all over the United States,” said Eric Gill, the union’s secretary-treasurer. “Through the Coalition, we now have new and valuable tools of partnership to work with Kaiser Permanente towards goals — like quality patient care and service — that both union and management people share, and to help ensure that Kaiser Permanente employees continue to set the standard for fair and competitive wages and benefits for Hawaii health care workers.”
The Kaiser Permanente Labor Management Partnership is the largest and longest-lasting partnership of its kind in the country, established in 1997 as an integrated and strategic approach to contract negotiations and collaborative care delivery. All parties work together to improve the quality of care for Kaiser Permanente members while providing industry-leading wages and benefits to employees.
“We are pleased to create this partnership with UNITE HERE Local 5, whose members play an integral role in our health care team,” said Jean Melnikoff, vice president, Human Resources at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “Our coalition partners have an active voice in strengthening care delivery decisions and work alongside our providers and health plan leaders to provide the highest levels of patient-centered care.”
