NCQA gives highest ratings to our Hawaii health plans

Kaiser Permanente plans are top-rated plans in Hawaii, according to the annual insurance plan ratings from National Committee for Quality Assurance.

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente plans are top-rated plans in Hawaii, according to the annual insurance plan ratings from National Committee for Quality Assurance, a leading independent health care quality assurance organization. The NCQA Commercial, Medicare and Medicaid Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2018–2019 are a five-point rating system based on patient experience, treatment outcomes and prevention efforts.

Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare health plan is the only plan in Hawaii, and one of just eight Medicare plans nationwide, to receive the highest possible rating of 5 out of 5. Its Medicaid plan received a 4.5 out of 5, the highest score in Hawaii, and its Commercial (private) plan received a 4.5 out of 5, also the top score of a Hawaii plan.

Kaiser Permanente’s focus on quality and patient experience continues with 2018 marking the 14th year in a row that Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare and Medicaid plans were recognized as the No. 1 in Hawaii, and the 11th year its commercial plan has received top marks in the state.

“At Kaiser Permanente, our integrated model of care and coverage revolves around providing our members with excellent treatment, quality health care and positive experiences,” said Dave Underriner, president Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals in Hawaii. “We’re pleased to be recognized by NCQA for consistently providing the highest level of care and service to our members, placing us among the highest-rated health plans in the nation.”

The NCQA Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2018–2019 is based on combined scores of Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set; the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems; and NCQA Accreditation standard scores. The new rating methodology, implemented in 2016, classifies plans into scores from 1–5 in 0.5 increments based on consumer experience, preventive measures and treatment outcomes, in a system similar to Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ 5-Star Quality Rating System.
