The NOD Leading Disability Employer Seal recognizes organizations that are leaders in disability recruitment and hiring. The DEI® brings together two of the leading disability organizations in the nation — the American Association of People With Disabilities, and the US Business Leadership Network® — to collectively advance the inclusion of people with disabilities. Kaiser Permanente has been participating in the DEI since 2014 but this is the first year the organization has received a top score of 100, up from 80 in 2016, and its first year receiving the Leading Disability Employer Seal.
“These designations recognize our commitment to diverse hiring practices and to supporting an inclusive environment in which all people can reach their full potential and thrive,” said Ronald L. Copeland, MD, FACS, senior vice president and chief Diversity and Inclusion officer at Kaiser Permanente. “Individuals with disabilities are a significantly untapped source of essential and unique talents that add value to our workforce and the community each and every day. Yet, just 20 percent are in the labor force and only one-fifth of people who want to work have a job. The reasons behind this statistic vary but there is a clear need for continued and transformational action. We must increase our capacity to focus on what people can do rather than what they cannot."
Kaiser Permanente is actively recruiting individuals with disabilities and is committed to ensuring all employees feel included and accepted at work. The Disability Recruitment website on KP Careers is an explicit message to job seekers with disabilities to consider Kaiser Permanente as their destination employer.
Kaiser Permanente also partners with universities to identify college students with disabilities who are interested in participating in their robust summer internship program. The organization views this as a solid first step to support students considering a career at Kaiser Permanente.
Kaiser Permanente’s commitment extends beyond the hiring process. KPability, an employee resource group for individuals with disabilities and their advocates, is leading the development of a new mindset for and about persons with disabilities. A resource for employees, managers, leaders and physicians, KPability focuses on empowering employees to optimize their talents and achieve their goals.
