High 5s again for state’s health plans

Kaiser Permanente earns highest possible rating in California for overall quality of medical care and mental health care.

Kaiser Permanente achieved the highest possible rating for overall quality of medical care in Southern California and Northern California in the annual Health Care Quality Report Card from California’s Office of the Patient Advocate.

Kaiser Permanente’s 2 California commercial health plans are the only 2 in the state to receive a 5-star rating for overall quality of medical care from OPA. For 13 consecutive years, Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Northern California are the only plans to obtain OPA’s highest rating.

Kaiser Permanente Northern California and Southern California also received 5 stars – the highest possible rating — for behavioral and mental health care, heart care, maternity care, preventive screenings, and diabetes care.

“This recognition demonstrates the high-quality care we provide our members, patients, and the communities we serve across the state of California,” said Janet Liang, executive vice president, group president and chief operating officer, care delivery, for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Hospitals. “I am grateful and proud of our health plan and Permanente medical group leaders and team members’ expertise and excellence as they consistently deliver high-quality mental, physical, and emotional health care to the more than 9.2 million Californians who depend on us.”

The 2020-21 report card provides California consumers with side-by-side comparisons of the 16 largest HMOs and PPOs in the state. It rates them on national standard-of-care measures that involve treatment and prevention of a range of conditions that have significant implications for personal health.

Leading in clinical quality

The results from OPA concur with the recent Covered California ratings, which recognized Kaiser Permanente as the only 5-star plan in the state for overall quality. Covered California — the state’s marketplace for the Affordable Care Act — also gave Kaiser Permanente 5 stars for “Getting the Right Care” and “Plan Services for Members.”
