DOWNEY, Calif. — Dozens of employees and physicians from Kaiser Permanente and the Housing Authority of Los Angeles will trade their smartphones and stethoscopes for shovels and gardening tools to beautify Imperial Courts and Nickerson Garden Housing Developments in Watts on Saturday, October 14 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Imperial Courts and Nickerson Gardens public housing communities are essential to the Watts community, providing over 1,500 units of affordable housing to 4,680 individuals.
“We are pleased to welcome Kaiser Permanente volunteers to our communities for this rejuvenation project,” said HACLA President and CEO Douglas Guthrie. “Nearly 40 percent of our residents are between the ages of 0-18, and that’s why projects such as this one to help beautify our communities take on a deeper meaning. As HACLA strives to provide safe and affordable housing for our families, this effort will help instill pride and a sense of community to the residents of these housing developments.”
Renovation work at the Imperial Courts and Nickerson Garden Housing Developments is funded by Kaiser Permanente’s National Facilities Services department, who selected Watts as the 2017 site for their annual Community Volunteer Day.
“Kaiser Permanente is proud to partner with local communities and donate our time and resources to support programs that create healthy communities,” said Ronald Smith, vice president, Kaiser Permanente National Facilities Services. “This project is an investment that includes more than 150 volunteers, and countless hours of preparation, including building of fences, planter boxes, pathways and shade structures. I am grateful for the work our volunteers have already completed to prepare for Saturday’s event.”
“Community service is in our DNA at Kaiser Permanente and I’m inspired by the time our employees and physicians are donating today to spruce up Imperial Courts and Nickerson Gardens,” said Jim Branchick, senior vice president and area manager, Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center. “With the Kaiser Permanente Watts Counseling and Learning Center, we’ve been part of the community for 50 years and this volunteer event is an extension of that commitment.”
This project is part of Kaiser Permanente’s employee community volunteer day events. Both housing developments will get new planters boxes for community gardens and refreshed outdoor community spaces with picnic tables for residents to enjoy. Also donating to this project are: LandPro, Inc., Santa Ana; Great Western Recreation; and Greenfields Outdoor Fitness Inc.
