HONOLULU — Today Kaiser Permanente provided nearly 70 free exams to Special Olympics Hawaii athletes at MedFest 2018, held at the Kaiser Permanente Mapunapuna Medical Office. MedFest is an annual Special Olympics event that provides free comprehensive physical screenings to ensure the health and safety of competing athletes.
“MedFest combines health and outreach. It gives our athletes the medical clearance they need to compete safely, and also improves access to care in the community for many participants who may not otherwise seek health services,” said Jen Ernst, healthy communities manager, Special Olympics Hawaii. “We’re grateful for Kaiser Permanente’s continued support and partnership as we work together to improve our athletes’ ability to train and embrace an active lifestyle.”
Volunteer Kaiser Permanente physicians and medical office staff checked athletes’ vision, height, weight, blood pressure, and cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health to ensure athletes are able to compete safely. Attendees also received a Kaiser Permanente water bottle and healthy snacks.
“As a longtime partner of Special Olympics, we’re proud to play a role in promoting physical activity and friendly competition to athletes with intellectual disabilities,” said David Tumilowicz, vice president of communications Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “MedFest gives our providers a unique opportunity to help these passionate athletes thrive.”
