Supporting Hawaii's school-based health programs with grants

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente Hawaii today announced that it will give two local nonprofits $55,000 in community benefit grants to support school based health programs. The grants support Kaiser Permanente’s mission of total health by funding programs that improve the mental, physical and social well-being of Hawaii’s residents.

Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center received $35,000 to improve access to adolescent, school-based health services in Waianae with school-based health centers at Waianae High School and Waianae Intermediate School. In the past year, nearly 1,200 middle school and high school students were served at WCCHC’s school-based health centers; more than 200 of those students were uninsured or underinsured. The grant will increase access to behavioral health services, screenings and group sessions with a licensed adolescent clinical psychologist.

American Diabetes Association received $20,000 to support the ongoing implementation of Act 214 in Hawaii, which authorizes Department of Education employees to volunteer and assist students with diabetes testing, insulin administration, and glucagon administration in emergencies. The grant will provide training for 100 personnel in 15 schools to perform routine and emergency diabetes care for more than 1,000 students living with this chronic condition.
