Announcing the next 'Our Community Stories' event in Colorado

New social media component to provide grant communication funding

DENVER — Whether it’s the powerful human-interest piece on the front page of your local paper, the eye-catching visuals on the 9 o’clock news, or a captivating voice over the radio, storytelling is vital to the success of any organization. And using social media is a key to ensuring more people share that story.

That’s why today Kaiser Permanente in Colorado announced a change to its unique video storytelling grant project called “Our Community Stories.” To help this year’s eight participating nonprofit partners spread their story, Kaiser Permanente will post the nonprofits’ videos to its social media feeds ( see links below) and ask Coloradans to pick the winner of this year’s challenge. The public will be able to vote on a winner by sharing, commenting on, or liking their favorite nonprofit’s video.

“We’ve learned a lot in the four years of this grant challenge. Most importantly, the nonprofits we’re supporting want more Coloradans to be able to easily engage in their work,” said Jandel Allen-Davis, MD, vice president of government, external relations, and research for Kaiser Permanente Colorado. “That’s why we’re proud to announce the new social media component to this year’s challenge. Our hope is that more Coloradans see and share these nonprofits’ videos to help spread their messages to communities that would otherwise be unaware of the positive changes taking place in their neighborhoods.”

Kaiser Permanente’s “Our Community Stories” engaged eight Colorado community partners in creating a video that showcases how their work is contributing to a healthier Colorado.

Each community partner set out with a camera, a tripod and a microphone to document their story. Their journeys included planning video shoots, conducting interviews and providing feedback on the editing process. Kaiser Permanente provided the video production tools, technical support, editing services and guidance through the filming process. Kaiser Permanente also awarded each nonprofit participant with the camera and tripod so they may continue to capture and share their visual stories.

Here are the eight organizations that make up this year’s “Our Community Stories” participants:

The social media storytelling challenge runs from Nov. 1-30, 2017. After completing the challenge, three organizations will be awarded a total of $4,500 in communication grant funding:

  • 1st place $2,000
  • 2nd place $1,500
  • 3rd place $1,000

Kaiser Permanente works directly with more than 200 community partners in a variety of ways, including grant-making, sponsorships, volunteer work and community health initiatives, to help all Coloradans thrive.
